GRINDHOUSE ERA ADS: ALTAR OF LUST

Watching a movie by the Findlays is like visiting a sleazy carnival. You know something bad might happen while you're there, but you still go.

I love listening to Roberta and Michael Findlay do voice-overs on their flicks. It's so unintentionally hilarious.

ALTAR OF LUST is about a woman that has conflicted feelings about sex, her boyfriend, and women. So she sees a shrink.

Roberta Findlay writes and directs her magnum opus, as a SOFTcore movie with HARDcore flavor.

There seems to be some real chemistry between the stars - Harry Reems and Viveca Hansen.

I think it's boring, but fun, and I'm happy to have it in my collection.

ALTAR OF LUST was released on DVD-R by SOMETHING WEIRD.

After the movie ends, you get.....

A promo spot for something weird catalogs

Followed by a promo for SOMETHING WEIRD flicks.

DESIRE AND HELL AT SUNSET MOTEL

The place is 1950s California, Bridey and Chester DeSoto check into a Anaheim motel.

This couple may not be what they seem. For starters, her husband rents TWO rooms... Why?

Bridey only seems to be concerned about two things, DISNEYLAND, and sex.

Chester thinks his wife is cheating on him, so he hires a guy to spy on Bridey. Unfortunately for Chester, his suspicions are correct.

As the night progresses, you'll encounter a frustrated female newlywed, and a voyeuristic-masturbating-motel-manager.

But, that's not all, we also get blackmail, beatnik style poetry, amnesia, and murder.....

DESIRE AND HELL AT SUNSET MOTEL was written and directed by Alien Castle.

It stars.....

Sherilyn Fenn as Bridey DeSoto

Whip Hubley as Chester DeSoto

David Hewlett as Deadpan aka Dwayne

David Johansen as Auggie

Shannon Sturges as Louella

Paul Bartel ( 1938 - 2000 ) as the motel manager.

QUOTES from the movie.....

"Money is the genitalia of our country"

"You bow-legged slut!... You'd hop on a dog if it was panting!"

Sherilyn Fenn kicks ass in this role. She really becomes her character.

In the United States, it was released on VHS by MEDIA HOME ENTERTAINMENT / VIDEO TREASURES.

As I write this, DESIRE AND HELL AT SUNSET MOTEL still has NOT been released on legit region one DVD.

I've only seen overpriced grey-market DVD-R's, and region four DVDs.

FYI: you may be able to find an online video.

STRANGE LUCK

I loved this show... then it got canceled.

Since the show aired on FOX, it was NOT a surprise. The FOX network was infamous for canceling unique tv shows.

Oh well, at least it ran for 17 episodes.

The show's main character is called Chance Harper.

Chance is a VERY lucky person.

He survives things that would kill anyone else.

STRANGE LUCK was a surreal roller coaster ride, and I loved it!

STRANGE LUCK was written by Karl Schaefer, and many others.

It was directed by various folks.

The show starred D.B. Sweeney ( as Chance Harper ), Frances Fisher ( as Angie ), Pamela Gidley ( as Audrey ), and Cynthia Martells ( as Dr. Richter ).

I think Pamela Gidley is cute.

I also think Ms. Gidley has two of the most beautiful legs to ever appear on U.S. television.

Some guys have all the luck.....

I don't remember STRANGE LUCK being released on VHS in the United States, and I have no idea if it was ever released in other countries.

I had recorded most of the episodes on VHS, but those tapes disappeared a long time ago.

As I write this, STRANGE LUCK has still NOT been released on legit region one DVD.

Even grey-market DVD-Rs are hard to find.

However, you may be able to watch it online. I found some episodes on YOUTUBE.

Didn't the star of this movie piss on the carpet of an airplane?

A short RANT.....

I'd love to tell you about some cool movie or documentary regarding Columbus, but I can't think of any.

Every movie and documentary I've seen since childhood, has SUCKED!

Anyway, I am sick and tired of all the COLUMBUS BASHING!

Folks that wish he had NEVER landed in the so-called "NEW WORLD" are fucking INSANE!

IT'S THE EQUIVALENT OF WISHING YOU WERE NEVER BORN!... Why?.... because THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, WOULD NOT EXIST!

STOP DEMONIZING COLUMBUS!... He's NOT the person responsible for the INFAMOUS TRAIL OF TEARS, NATIVE AMERICAN BOARDING SCHOOLS, and countless other SHAMEFUL ATROCITIES!

POTATOES, TOMATOES, MAIZ aka MAIZE aka CORN, and even CHOCOLATE, are ALL FROM the so-called "new world"... Think about that, and all the other things most of us take for granted.

I remember reading about some college in New York, that refused to acknowledge Columbus day. What a bunch of FUCKING HYPOCRITES!.... Give the college land back to the local tribe and STOP CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING!... Otherwise, shut the fuck up!

Just for the record, I have Indigenous blood mixed with my European blood.

I really thought I was going to hate UP IN THE AIR, but I ended up loving it.

A warning to all those golly-gee-whiz women, and some men, this is NOT a romantic comedy.

If you're looking for a movie that is, ABSURDLY UNrealistic about love and life, or INSULTING to your intelligence, or NAUSEATINGLY and ARTIFICIALLY cute, then look elsewhere!.... Because this is NOT the movie for you.

The movie is about a man that fires people for a living, his trainee, and his personal life.

UP IN THE AIR was written by Walter Kirn, Sheldon Turner, and Jason Reitman. It was directed by Jason Reitman.

It stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, and Anna Kendrick.

It was released on region one DVD, and BLU-RAY, by PARAMOUNT.

Slim Whitman on LATE NIGHT ( David Letterman )

Slim Whitman performing on LATE NIGHT ( David Letterman )

I did NOT know that Slim Whitman had passed away ( January 20, 1923 – June 19, 2013 ).

The MASS-MEDIA has ignored the deaths of far too many creative folks that we grew up with.

They also ignored Kevin McCarthy's death ( INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE MISFITS, and countless other movies and tv shows ).

Most of the ass-kissing morons in the mass-media would rather focus on useless shmucks, like Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and arrogant-inbred-parasites ( aka royalty ).

Slim Whitman music cds

FYI: His music was used in movies, and he also appeared in a flick called JAMBOREE.

JAMBOREE was released on region one DVD by WARNER BROS.

I remember listening to some of his songs during a childhood cross-country trip in 1969.

Music by Slim Whitman, Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, Buck Owens, the INCREDIBLE Roy Clark, and many others, filled the air of countless motels, diners, and gas stations. That music had a very calming effect on me.

Let me remind all of you, that after you hit a certain age, the years fly by faster than you could ever imagine. It feels good to hold on to some comforting memories.

If there's a heaven, I hope Mr. Whitman is there, doing whatever makes him happy... Adios amigo.....

GRINDHOUSE ERA ADS: SAVAGE WEEKEND

In my opinion, far too many movies have been mis-labeled as horror films.

I enjoyed watching SAVAGE WEEKEND. I think it's harmless fun.

William Sanderson

David Gale ( 1936 – 1991 )

There's lots of boobies, and odd murders, and what's wrong with that?!

I usually don't give a shit about the opinions of professional movie critics. However, every so often one of them crosses the line.... Below are a couple of quotes from an incredibly arrogant and self-righteous film critic.

QUOTE 1 - "for strictly the most troubled audiences"

MY RESPONSE - This critic actually thinks he is MORALLY SUPERIOR to all the folks that have watched this film. Cute, really cute. Too bad he didn't express his thoughts to the patrons.

QUOTE 2 - "SAVAGE WEEKEND has an R rating despite seemingly X levels of sadism and nudity"

MY RESPONSE - "X levels of sadism and nudity"?!... Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?!... Which movie was this guy watching?!... Did he grow up in MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD?!

Apparently, he's never seen the cinematic abomination called CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. Or any of those NAZISPLOITATION FLICKS from the 1970s!

I don't think SAVAGE WEEKEND deserves to be accused of being something it's NOT. This critic makes SAVAGE WEEKEND sound like one of the most vile movies ever filmed.

I'm always amazed by how OUT-OF-TOUCH, and CLUELESS, most professional movie critics are.

The last time I read such an ABSURDLY HYSTERICAL "review", was when SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT was released.

This critic's ULTRA-DELICATE-NATURE would be better served by watching kid flicks, like MARY POPPINS!

Order a pizza, get some ice cold drinks. Then sit with your significant other, or friends, or both, or neither, and relax while you watch this flick... Laugh, cry, burp, and fart.... and above all, have fun.

SAVAGE WEEKEND was released on VHS by PARAGON ( and maybe a few other companies ).

Region one DVDs have been released by various public domain firms, and grey-market folks.

My advice, buy it cheap!

It's part of the DRIVE-IN MOVIE CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK ( by MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT ).

WARNING, there are several versions of the same set. Some of those sets contain this movie, and some sets do NOT!... CHECK THE BACK OF THE PACK!

I was lucky enough to find an older version of this set that contained SAVAGE WEEKEND. I paid TEN DOLLARS for it, and I found it at a local WALMART.

NOTE: the movie is shown in FULLscreen.

MARRIED WITH CHILDREN

$

A couple of years ago, SONY released a lower priced version of the MARRIED WITH CHILDREN boxed set.

I have NOT purchased it yet, because I've been waiting for holiday pricing.

Keep in mind, that for the last six or seven years, I haven't paid more than FIVE DOLLARS for most of my DVDs. In fact, most of the discs in my collection, have cost three dollars or less!

The only DVDs I've paid more than FIVE dollars for, are the 50 MOVIE packs by MILL CREEK, and some discs from the following companies, SYNAPSE, SHOUT FACTORY, BLUE UNDERGROUND, SOMETHING WEIRD, VINEGAR SYNDROME, ALTERNATIVE CINEMA, CRITERION, and VIDEO X PIX ( all of these discs - except the MILL CREEK SETS - were LESS than ten dollars each ).

I've always loved movies far more than tv shows, but MARRIED WITH CHILDREN is one of those exceptions to the rule. I'm NOT going to say that I loved every episode, because I didn't!... Some real turkeys were aired... Apologies to my FOWL friends for the derogatory use of the word turkey.

Anyway, I really want this set. It's supposed to have 32 discs, and as usual, some of the original music has been replaced. But, if that means all the episodes get released, and a lower price, then I'm ok with it.

Think about all the shows that have NOT been released because of cost issues with music.

Some folks don't like the packaging of the 2nd version. Well, all I can say is, get over it! There's NOTHING wrong with the way they did it!... Plus, it helped to lower the cost!

DVDs are far more DURABLE than most people think. I have countless DVDs with TONS OF SCRATCHES on them, and they work PERFECTLY!

Meanwhile, I've got DVDs with smudges / fingerprints that do NOT play correctly, or they freeze completely!... Just for the record, I tried to clean the discs with the appropriate materials, but there's always some residue left on the discs.

Think about all the actresses and actors that had bit parts on this show, before they became big stars.

Imagine if 1960's exploitation filmmakers like Doris Wishman, Barry Mahon, and David F. Friedman, got together and made a tv show. Well, if you love 1960's sexploitation flicks as much as I do, then MARRIED WITH CHILDREN is as close to a sexploitation tv series as you're ever going to get.

A lot of hot babes have appeared on this show. In addition to cast member Christina Applegate, there was... Andrea Parker, Milla Jovovich, Traci Lords, Kari Wuhrer, Eva La Rue, Denise Richards, Ashlie Rhey, Debbe Dunning, Teri Weigel, Heather Elizabeth Parkhurst, Rhonda Shear, Charlie Spradling, Dona Speir, Jerry Hall, Brandi Brandt, Ava Fabian, Lynne Austin, and many others.

QUOTE FROM THE TRAILER: "You won't believe your eyes!... You won't believe your ears!"

Can you smell it?... That unmistakable aroma of aged cheese?

Well, I smell it,... and I LOVE IT!

It's INFRA-MAN!

I loved watching this when I was young.

A scientifically enhanced man with SUPER-SUPER-SUPER POWERS. He battles really odd looking creatures and a hot evil babe.

What are you waiting for?!... Rush out and find a used copy, or a new one.... Whatever floats your boat!

I think it was released on VHS by PRISM ENTERTAINMENT. I believe GOOD TIMES VIDEO also released it on tape.

A region one DVD was released by IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT.

I've been told, the disc seems to have some herky-jerky movement in a few scenes. It's NOT a major problem ( but some folks do notice it ).

This is one of the first monster movies I ever saw.

I remember how clear most of the underwater scenes were. Usually, those types of scenes are really dark and murky.

I also had fun watching the sequels ( REVENGE OF THE CREATURE and CREATURE WALKS AMONG US ).

Just for the record, I've NEVER seen the 3D version.

FYI: Julie Adams and Ricou Browning still make appearances at popular culture conventions.

It was released on VHS a few times by MCA / UNIVERSAL.

This movie - and it's sequels - have been released on region one DVD many times by UNIVERSAL ( as a solo disc and in collections ).

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON has also been released on BLU-RAY by UNIVERSAL.

I have very fond memories of watching the original version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS on television when I was a kid.

The scene with the pod-people hatching in the greenhouse, is still incredibly effective. After all this time, it still looks great.

Just for the record, I also love the 1978 version. In my opinion, it's more of a sequel than a remake.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS has been released on VHS three or four times by REPUBLIC PICTURES.

The region one DVD was released a couple of times by ARTISAN.

OLIVE FILMS has released their DVD with a poster art cover. As tempted as I am to purchase it, I just can NOT justify spending $20.00 for a single movie ( and it's a bare bones disc ).

OLIVE FILMS has also released this movie on BLU-RAY ( with poster art cover ).

MOVIE ADS: INVADERS FROM MARS

This is fucking creepy... That's one of the many thoughts that materialized in my mind, the first time I saw INVADERS FROM MARS ( the original version from 1953 ).

After all this time, the multi-armed thing in the glass dome, is still one of my favorite cinematic creatures.

Helena Carter ( 1920 – 2000 ) plays the smart, beautiful, and leggy, female doctor. She's also the first person to believe the kid.

Jimmy Hunt plays the kid that sees it all and discovers the martian conspiracy.

There are a few unintentionally funny moments in this fillm. Such as, when the father slaps the shit out of his son.

FYI: Barbara Billingsley ( 1915 – 2010 ) makes a brief appearance.

INVADERS FROM MARS was released on VHS a couple of times. However, I can NOT remember the name of the company, or companies, that released the tapes.

It was released on region one DVD by IMAGE. It was part of a three movie set called MISSION MARS COLLECTION ( with ATTACK FROM MARS and FLIGHT TO MARS ).

IMAGE also released a solo disc ( 50th anniversary special edition ). This is the version you should purchase.

IT CAME WITHOUT WARNING POSTER

This is one of my favorite posters from the 1980's.

This is the type of poster that makes you WANT to see the movie!

Long BEFORE PREDATOR, there was IT CAME WITHOUT WARNING.

It's about an extraterrestrial being that comes to earth for a hunting vacation. He also brings along some flesh-frisbees that munch on people, and anything else with a pulse.

This movie was written by, Lyn Freeman, Daniel Grodnik, Ben Nett, and Steve Mathis.

IT CAME WITHOUT WARNING was directed by Greydon Clark.

Check out the cast... Martin Landau, Jack Palance ( 1919 – 2006 ), Cameron Mitchell ( 1918 – 1994 ), Neville Brand ( 1920 – 1992 ), Ralph Meeker ( 1920 – 1988 ), Larry Storch, David Caruso, and... the super hot Lynn Theel.

IT CAME WITHOUT WARNING is also known as WITHOUT WARNING, and also ALIEN WARNING.

I don't think it had a legit VHS release in the United States. I owned a bootleg tape, because I couldn't find an official release.

As I write this, IT CAME WITHOUT WARNING has still NOT been released on legit region one DVD. I've seen grey-market discs for sale at $25.00 - that's too much.

I am AGAINST bootlegs. However, when companies repeatedly FAIL to release legit home videos..... I say, get it anyway you can!

FIVE DOLLAR MILL CREEK COLLECTIONS AT WALMART - OCT 2013

$

A few weeks ago, I saw a cardboard display at one of my local WALMARTS. It contained 8, 12, and 20 movie packs. They were all priced at FIVE DOLLARS each.

Just for the record, I'm NOT cheap, I'm just broke... there's a BIG difference.

However, even if I was "well-off", I'd still have a difficult time trying to justify the purchase of a single movie DVD for more than five dollars - it just seems like a waste of money. There are SOME exceptions, but not many.

During the past few years, I've eliminated almost all of my single movie discs ( I still find "lost" discs in closets and storage bins ).

Anyway, below is a list of MILL CREEK sets I've recently purchased.....

DEADLY SECRETS - 8 movies

DEADLY DESIRES - 8 movies

TABOO TALES - 12 movies

TOP OF THE CLASS - 12 movies

FREAK SHOW CINEMA - 12 movies

OLD WEST OUTLAWS - 20 movies

FUEL INJECTED FILMS - 20 movies

UNDER ENEMY FIRE - 20 movies

In the past, WALMART had 50 movie packs on sale for ten dollars each.

Plus, I occasionally find movies in the bargain bin by companies WALMART usually doesn't carry, such as IFC. You never know what you're going to find in their bargain bins.

I'll be writing posts for each of these sets when I have time.

ELISHA CUTHBERT

From SHAPE MAGAZINE cover shoot video

Like most folks, I first heard of Elisha Cuthbert when she was part of a tv show called 24.

I lost interest in 24 fairly quickly. Most television shows don't last the test-of-time as well as movies. Even movies that are incredibly dated, still have a charm about them that eludes most tv shows.

I never thought much of Ms. Cuthbert as an actress. However, during the past week, I've reassessed my opinion.

So what changed my mind?... I watched her in a movie called THE QUIET.

Her performance in this movie really impressed me. She made me feel every bit of anguish her character was feeling.

A few days later, I saw her in a flick called HE WAS A QUIET MAN.

Once again, she made me believe her character was a real human being.

THE QUIET was released on region one DVD a few times.

It's part of an eight movie pack called DEADLY DESIRES ( by MILL CREEK ). I got it for five dollars at WALMART.

NOTE: the audio is out-of-sync on my disc, but I don't care ( I just pretend it's a badly dubbed Asian flick... ha-ha-ha ).

It was also released as a region one solo disc, by SONY.

HE WAS A QUIET MAN was released on region one DVD by ANCHOR BAY. They also released it on BLU-RAY.

I love short stories, and short films. I don't think either gets the respect or amount of attention they deserve.

All the short stories in this collection were written by a young Lawrence Block.

I'm very happy to add ONE NIGHT STANDS AND LOST WEEKENDS to my collection of "block-books".

WARM UP WITH TRACI LORDS

$

After Ron Harris released AEROBICISE, it seemed like everbody jumped on the exercise video bandwagon.

I think Traci Lords appeared in two direct to VHS "exercise" films ( wink, wink ). One is called WARM UP WITH TRACI LORDS, and the other one is entitled ADVANCED JAZZTHETICS.

I've been told the content is the same on both tapes. One version is supposedly longer than the other. However, I can NOT verify any of this information.

WORDS OF WISDOM AKA QUOTES from WARM UP WITH TRACI LORDS.....

"When we get to the HARD stuff, you will notice that it's fast paced"

"Keep your tummy firm and tight, if it hurts you gotta fight!"

"Roll your hips round and round, a perfect circle should be found... turn, turn, feel it burn"

"Don't jerk it hard, keep it smooth"

"Twist it now, the other way, you'll feel better all the day"

"Stretch it!... YEAH!"

"Flex your arms, MUSCLES grow"

"Do it softly, till you're sore"

"Pull!... Stretch it!"

"Pull it!.. pull it!.. pull it!"

"Feel the tightness in your rear, MUSCLES will soon appear"

"Press your pelvis to the air, keep your can nice and square"

"Wipe it off, if you're wet"

"Legs apart, up you'll sit, thrust it twice"

"PULL IT!, DO IT!, HARDER!, GOOD!"

Did those quotes enlighten you?

This SEXexercise video... sorry, I meant exercise video, is yet another example of folks trying to cash-in, on the sweat-is-sexy craze.

WARM UP WITH TRACI LORDS is unintentionally HILARIOUS and even a little SLEAZY... I highly recommend it!

I've always had a lot of mixed feelings about Traci, but I love watching her action flicks.

Both, WARM UP WITH TRACI LORDS, and ADVANCED JAZZTHETICS were released on VHS ( I can not remember by which companies ).

Both of these "work-out" programs MAY have been released twice on region one DVD ( by BCI ).

The first DVD is called JAZZTHETICS.

The second DVD is called 10 BEST FITNESS WORKOUTS.

Once again, I can NOT confirm that these films are actually on these discs.

This is a really RARE film.

BLOOD NASTY is a supernatural-horror-comedy.

A nice guy crook, named Roy Flowers, is double-crossed and murdered.

Roy comes back from the dead, after he's possessed by another deceased crook named Luis "Blade" Orlando... and sexy-bloody-wackiness ensues.

Linnea Quigley plays Blade's psychic-stripper girlfriend.

I don't think it ever had a legit VHS release in the United States. That's probably why I owned a bootleg tape for years ( I no longer have it ).

I've been told that BLOOD NASTY was released on VHS in Germany, and a few other countries.

As I write this, BLOOD NASTY has still NOT been released on region one DVD... So get it any way you can!

It's been years since I've seen it... Thank goodness for YOUTUBE!

Could you save the world with a wad of chewing gum, a dust bunny, and a used tampon?!.... Well, MacGyver could!

That guy was really handy with just about anything!

This show was McCheesy and that's why I liked it. Plus, Richard Dean Anderson seemed to be having fun with his role.

I never watched the entire series, but I did enjoy the episodes I saw.

As you probably know, MacGyver was played by Richard Dean Anderson.

One of my favorite episodes was called MacGYVER's WOMEN.

"HOW OLD?!.. I thought she was 31!.. Honest!" - The preceding quote was NOT from the show... I'm just being a smart-ass...

"Hey MacGyver!, weren't you going to ride me like a pony?" - The preceding quote was NOT from the show...

To avoid dealing with his three female houseguests, MacGyver goes to his bedroom and watches an old western. Minutes later, he falls asleep and becomes part of the movie he was watching. His female guests are also part of his dream... he-he-he. Get your mind out of the gutter, it ain't that kind of dream.

Anyway, the three female characters are played by, Traci Lords, Kim Zimmer, and Brigitta Stenberg.

I think there were two or three made-for-tv MacGYVER flicks, but I'm not sure.

I don't think the series - or movies - were released on VHS domestically.

Individual series sets - and movies - were released on region one DVD by PARAMOUNT.

The COMPLETE SERIES was also released on region one DVD by PARAMOUNT... It ain't cheap!...

I can NOT find info on the Bennett twins current status.

The mid to late seventies was when I first saw them - via bootleg VHS ( it was a short film ).

Anyway, I never forgot them.

Darlene was my favorite.

They always seemed to have fun performing, and that always put a smile on my face.

I don't know if either of them used their real names or pseudonyms.

Dawn Bennett in CONFESSIONS OF A BAD GIRL

SOMETHING WEIRD has released a lot of short, and feature length films, with BOTH Darlene and Dawn.
